FIRST CLASS GUIDE
YOUR FREE TRIAL CLASS: TIPS FOR YOUR FIRST SESSION
Trying a martial arts class for the first time can feel a little daunting, whether it's for you or your child. Here's how to get the most from your free trial Choi Kwang Do class in Twickenham.
Before the class
- Book ahead using the form on the class page, so we know to expect you
- Check the timetable for the right class: Kids (6–11) or Teen/Adult (12+)
- Eat a light snack an hour or two before, not a big meal
- Let us know about any injuries or medical conditions when you book
- Plan to arrive 10 minutes early to meet the instructor and settle in
What to wear and bring
- Comfortable sportswear: a T-shirt and jogging bottoms or leggings
- A water bottle
- Nothing else. No uniform, gloves or pads are needed for a trial
- Remove jewellery and tie back long hair for safety
What happens in a trial class
You'll join a normal class alongside other students, with the instructor making sure you're comfortable. A typical session includes a warm-up and stretching, basic strikes and kicks on pads, some simple self-defence, and a cool-down. Everything is taught step by step, and you work at your own pace. Choi Kwang Do is non-competitive, so there's no pressure to keep up with anyone else. Learn more about Choi Kwang Do.
Tips for parents of first-timers
- Talk it through beforehand so your child knows what to expect
- Focus on fun and trying something new, not getting it right
- Shy children often warm up after the first few minutes, so give it time
- Ask your child afterwards what they enjoyed most

- Ask questions; instructors are happy to break techniques down
- Expect to feel some new muscles the next day!
After your trial
Take a moment to think about how you or your child felt during the class.
